The things concerning Himself

How to talk WITH God (also called prayer!)

And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?” Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?” And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, … And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.” Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!   Luke 24:17–25

There are things that God wants to do with you. Like enjoying a favorite drink with Him. Just spending the moment with the Lord. 'You know, Lord, this is some really great coffee...'. It was Jesus' idea to join these two men and walk and talk with them. Have you ever considered that prayer is essentially a conversation with the Lord? If Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then the kind of conversation He had with them might be the same kind of conversation we have with the Lord today. He walked with them and He talked with them. Here are some thoughts about prayer we can glean from this journey to Emmaus:

  • It’s a dialogue. They talk, and then He talks. He spoke and waited for their response before continuing. Don’t be afraid to say exactly what’s on your mind.

  • They asked questions, and He asked questions. Often, the Lord advances the conversation with questions. When you pray, you are talking to God – ask questions!

  • He was patient in listening. He spoke their language – even in correction. “O foolish ones, and slow of heart…” but sometimes this is what we all need.

  • He brought them back to what was written in God’s word.
